Weekend in Nahma

June 23rd, 2008 by greg

Leah's fishWe had another weekend in Nahma and the weather was fairly decent. It seemed like it rained and thunderstormed about half the time we were there. Then today, of course, the temperature had to drop drastically into the 50s for most of the day. Lately, it seems we get a cold streak that lasts two weeks and then it warms into the 70s for a day or two, then back to the cold. It has also been rainy or cloudy about every day as well. It’s truly crazy that next Friday is the Fourth of July!

Anyways, getting back to Nahma, we didn’t do a whole lot but that’s okay because that’s what we usually do there. On Saturday, it was warm enough to put our swimsuits on and walk the beach but the water is still pretty cold. Leah’s mom was determined to swim this weekend and so she did, the first to go this year. The lake levels are definitely up, so that’s good too. It seems to actually have risen since last weekend, too. On Saturday night we all went fishing down at the channel where people launch their boats. The fishing was pretty good with a number of fish caught. I handed my fishing pole to Leah and she caught 2 fish on 3 casts in a matter of a couple minutes. Her first fish was the biggest of the night being a 22″ northern pike! She was extremely excited and kept yelling, “I’ve got one! I’ve got one!” I’ve also added it to the Fish Gallery on the Fishing Journal page as well.

Leah’s parents’ dog Casey was extremely excited about fishing, too. He stood in the water for almost 2 hours and was completely water logged. He was very interested in trying to eat the fish and kept wanting to chase the lure after casting but luckily he isn’t a swimmer. At one point, though, Leah’s dad was reeling in a pretty good size bass and Casey went too deep and his back end was floating in the water. Pretty hilarious! Leah captured some video of the quiet evening and Casey in the water.

It is also Leah’s birthday this Wednesday, the 25th! Happy birthday babe!

Fun Finds Friday

  1. Kami used to work at the Chuckwagon. I imagine that this was quite the talk there for awhile. Ridiculous.
  2. Quiz time! This one was really easy, which is how I got 90% on it.
  3. This is terrible! A puppy was crushed in a cardboard compactor, but escaped with only a bruise.
  4. Here’s another animal story: this mother duck’s babies fell into a storm drain, so she walked two miles to follow them.
  5. This is cool. I haven’t had a chance to look at it much, but it’s the abridged “script” for the new Indiana Jones movie. Funny.

The week in review

June 20th, 2008 by Leah

This past week was pretty boring. I was busy with freelance work and Greg was busy with regular work. The weather here was pretty crummy. Well, it didn’t rain, but it wasn’t exactly warm. We had to turn the heat back on because it was getting really, really cold at night. Today it’s in the 70s so maybe the cold spell is over? I can dream, anyway.

So we made an offer two weeks ago on a house we looked at. It was a foreclosure, so it’s owned by a bank down in Milwaukee. I’m not going to go into it because this post would be way long, but we still haven’t heard back yet. Frustrating. Thankfully, we don’t have to move within a certain time frame, so if it doesn’t work out, we’ll just keep looking.

Today is the first day of summer, can you believe it? Maybe this weekend we’ll finally go swimming. The water last weekend wasn’t too bad (I’ve swam in colder), but the air wasn’t the warmest. It’s supposed to be warm tomorrow, but a chance of thunderstorms, so we’ll see. I love summer. It’s my most favorite time in the U.P. Except for the woodticks. I have a crazy fear of them. Last night Greg was mowing our yard and managed to get a woodtick on him. In our yard. That is just disgusting. He thinks it happened when he was taking these pictures of mushrooms growing in the yard before he mowed them over. Ew.

Anyway, on to the Fun Finds Friday!

  1. This cute pig is afraid of mud. It surprises me that animals could have fears like that. I wonder if there are birds afraid of flying?
  2. I only got 27% on the Indiana Jones quiz. See if you can do better (and I’m sure you can).
  3. I love Dinosaur Comics, and this one cracked me up. “I’m cold-blooded, check it and see…” And this one is pretty funny, too.
  4. Did you know that you can get insurance against robots? I think we need to get some. You never know when they’ll show up and eat all of your pills.
  5. Live cub cam! This is so cute! It’s somewhere over in Norway, I think.

Gone in 3 hours

June 10th, 2008 by greg

Much to our surprise, my old 1995 Chevy S-10 that I described a few posts ago is gone. On Saturday, I spent a few hours cleaning the inside and took it to the car wash. Then on Sunday, I put a “For Sale” sign in the window and parked it out by the road. At 9pm, I had my first potential owner take it for a test drive. They tried to talk down the price from $800 to $500 because the mirror and windshield had a crack. Also, they said the engine made a ticking sound and that they would have to replace the engine soon. I’m thinking “What do you expect for a vehicle with 142,000 miles on it?” Then, a half-hour later I get a call and some guy wants to buy the truck right now. I said, “Don’t you want to take it for a test?” He then decided to take it for spin and look it over with a flashlight in the dark! He purchased it for the full $800 and in cash (Leah thought I should have taken the bills to the bank to make sure they were real). His plan for the truck… repaint it, lower it and put Camero rims and tires on it! I never thought Papa Smurf would be the pimp mobile!

Not too much happening besides that. It was extremely hot this past weekend with temperatures near 90° on Saturday. It’s quite the contrast to right now, though, with the temperature being 45°! Last Thursday was our 4-year wedding anniversary. It’s hard to believe its been that long… :) We celebrated by going to this newer, upscale steakhouse in Marquette that left a big dent in the wallet.

I guess Papa Smurf helped us celebrate…
