Back to winter

18 Feb

Since the last posting, not a whole lot has changed around here. The beginning of last week we experienced a big warm up like most of you may have experienced. It was above freezing for several days and we reached a high of 46 degrees on one of the days. We lost well over a foot of snow but still had over 18 inches on the ground when the temp. dropped back to normal conditions. Today, winter is back with a vengeance. It’s been snowing all day and the wind is blowing pretty hard. The visibility has been pretty bad for driving. Greg tried snow blowing tonight just to help us get out in the morning. We’ve maybe gotten 10 inches today with 3-foot drifts in some spots. We’ll see how tomorrow goes.

This past weekend we had a great time with Kami and Ryan coming to visit us. (They use to live in Wyoming but now live in Minnesota.) On Saturday, Greg and Ryan went fishing up in Big Bay but didn’t manage to catch anything. We ended up having a nice Valentine’s Day dinner at our house because of the busy restaurants. On Sunday, we drove around Marquette and showed them various sights. We also watched the sheriff dept. rescue a deer that wandered on the ice. They used a hover craft which was pretty cool but we didn’t know if they actually got the deer until the next morning’s news. It actually broke through the ice at one point.

Tomorrow night we go for a second look on a potential home to buy. It’s a pretty decent home in a location we like, about 7 miles south of where we currently live. We’ll see how it goes. Friday night is the start of the U.P. 200 dog sled race in Marquette. It’s always fun to go and truly a unique event. Come check it out if you get a chance.

Outfished II

5 Feb

Its been another typical U.P. winter week here in the north. We received around 8″ of new snow from Monday through Wednesday while areas to the west and east had 2 feet dumped on them! The forecast is calling for more milder temps over the weekend and into next week. It’ll be interesting to see how much snow we end up with by spring.

Last weekend was pretty uneventful for us. On Saturday we drove up to Big Bay and ice fished on Lake Independence, a first for both of us. It’s a very beautiful area, if you haven’t been up there before. Leah managed to outfish me again with 7 good-sized perch while I had only 5. On Sunday we carried on our tradition of ordering KFC for the Super Bowl. One of my roommates in college passed the tradition to us that his family always did. It’s about the only time we actually eat from there. Another highlight was Leah winning more than $60 in her work’s pool. She almost won twice if Pittsburgh didn’t score their winning touchdown. It made it an exciting game.

This weekend should be pretty relaxing. On Friday we’ve got free tickets to NMU’s hockey game and on Saturday we’re heading to Munising to watch Leah’s sister’s cheerleading competition. Maybe do something fishing as well. I can’t let Leah’s streak continue! [Ha! Just watch me. --Leah]
