January, in brief

27 Jan

So we’re nearing the end of January already, can you believe it? Six months from now we’ll be swimming. I just have to keep telling myself that when it’s -15° like it’s been the last few mornings.

So what have we been up to the last few weeks? Well, we’ve been ice fishing a few times. We haven’t caught much yet, but hopefully soon. And we’ve been watching Netflix movies. Wall-E: great. Tropic Thunder: funny. Wanted: awful. And how sad is it that I can’t really think what else we’ve been doing?

This weekend is our annual KFC Super Bowl feast. Not as exciting as it sounds, it involves us bringing KFC home and eating it in front of the TV while we watch the game. We’ve been doing this tradition for the last 5 or so years and it’s the only time we eat KFC all year. I’m rooting for the Cardinals. Kurt Warner was my fantasy quarterback (after Tom Brady was gone after the first game), plus I like to root for the underdog.

We’re still house hunting, but haven’t found any lately that we want to see, which is disappointing. I keep telling Greg that we’ll find our perfect house but it gets frustrating.

And we’ve been watching American Idol. Have you guys been checking out the auditions? They haven’t been as bad as in past years, which is nice, but I’ll be glad when we get to the actual competition.

We’ve been having some losses in our fish tank lately, unfortunately. In the last two months we’ve lost 5 or so fish. We got four more on Sunday but that doesn’t fix the problem. We’ve bought some testing strips to try to figure out what’s wrong with the tank and Greg faithfully checks the water and dumps chemical in. The water is looking better, so hopefully we’ve gotten things taken care of.

Wow, when I read about our month like this it seems so boring! We do have quite a bit planned for February so it should be more exciting. We’re going to a hockey game, one of Dayna’s cheering competitions, the U.P. 200 sled dog race, and Kami and Ryan are coming to visit us for a weekend. Should be fun! (Plus it’s a short month and there will be Valentine’s candy!)

Outfished

12 Jan

Last weekend was a quiet one for us at home. On Friday night we went to Erin and Ken’s house to visit and give Caleb his belated birthday gift. He turned five back in late December. On Saturday the weather was really nice being in the 20s with no wind, a real rarity. We decided to try a new lake east of Gwinn called Bass Lake. There were quite a few other people out there so we were hoping it was going to be good. In the end, Leah out-fished me with one perch. I missed three bigger fish with one of them taking drag before getting off the hook. We also had another on a tip-up but it manage to break the line on the initial set. It was really cool to see the full moon (largest and brightest of ’09) coming up over the horizon.

On Sunday, the weather was again really nice. We got some stuff done around the house and did some shopping complete with a trip to Gander Mountain. Leah picked out a few new lures so we’ll have to give those a try this weekend. Have a good week.

The holidays are over

6 Jan

Well, it’s back to our usual schedules this week.  The last two weeks have been pretty nice; because of the holidays, Greg had two-day work weeks and Leah three. For Christmas and New Year’s we were at Leah’s parents’ house in the U.P. Both times there we pretty much relaxed, slept in and ate (a lot of) good food.

We spent the day after Christmas with our goddaughter Chloe and her sister Lily (Leah’s cousins). The last time we saw her was at Labor Day and she’s now very talkative and seems to like Greg more. We also saw Greg’s brother, Chris, who married Leah’s friend/neighbor Theresa. (It’s a little weird seeing your brother at Christmas Eve mass and not sitting with him in the same pew.) View Christmas photos.

After a couple days of work it was time for New Year’s! On New Year’s Eve we drove down to Nahma and celebrated at Mac’s Bar. The following day we drove to Leah’s parents’ house for the rest of our break. Leah’s brother Justin and his girlfriend Laura came up from Green Bay to celebrate, too. We brought Guitar Hero and played that quite a bit. We also went to Leah’s sister’s cheer scrimmage which was pretty intense at times. On Friday afternoon we all went ice skating at the local outdoor rink which was pretty chilly but fun. View New Year’s photos.

As for the weather, the big snowfalls have stopped for the time being. Instead we’ve been getting a few inches every couple days which adds up pretty quickly. The National Weather Service of Marquette has received 120″ of snow so far this season and has had 27 (and counting) consecutive days of measurable snowfall! Our house isn’t located in the highlands so we don’t have that much. Yet.
