Snow, snow and more snow

19 Nov

Winter has kicked autumn’s butt right out the door. It’s pretty much the best way we can put it. The weather has been the main story around here. Starting this past weekend, the area has gotten hit with a lot of snow compared to the past few years. It has been mainly lake-effect snow and we received around 7″ at our house while areas to the southeast received almost 2 feet of snow! (Last night, Greg actually saw 2 snowmobilers riding near Munising.) Yesterday was the first time we had to snow blow the driveway. Greg was working a little longer so Leah decided she was going to do it. It was her first time ever doing the whole driveway and she did a great job. Afterward, she was pretty exhausted and sore today.

We are currently in another lake-effect snow warning that will last until Friday morning. It looks like a blizzard outside right now with the wind and falling snow. Here in Beaver Grove, we’re supposed to get a foot of new snow from this latest dumping. The high terrain areas, south of us, are forecasted to get another 2 feet of snow.

Greg will try to keep the Snowfall Stats ( —->) up-to-date with this latest event. Hopefully it will get better for our travels downstate next week!

Another weekend in Nahma

10 Nov

This past weekend was pretty relaxing in Nahma as we went down for Leah’s mom’s birthday and Bob Johnson’s 80th party at the hall. On Saturday we didn’t do a whole lot. Leah’s dad and Greg cut and hauled wood for next summer’s bonfires on the beach. That night we went to a birthday party for Bob Johnson at the Nahma Hall. We didn’t really know Bob but he had a good party with dinner and a live band. That night it snowed but not enough to collect on the ground. On Sunday morning we headed back home and found our first measurable snowfall in the yard. It wasn’t much but enough to start the measuring for Greg. Many areas to the west and east of Marquette received quite a bit of snow. Greg actually got to use his 4-wheel drive this morning on the way to work and he said it made quite the difference compared to his old truck. It actually snowed most of the day in Munising while he was there and some spots east of there received over 17″ of snow! It’s suppose to warm up a smidge during the week but cool down again by the weekend.

This weekend we’ll stay at home. Leah’s alma mater, Kingsford, will be playing football against Grand Rapids Catholic Central at NMU’s Superior Dome. It should be a good game and hopefully they come out on top!

Halloween in Nahma

5 Nov

This past weekend we traveled to Nahma for a Halloween party at Mac’s Bar on Friday night. As always it was a good time. It was a last-minute scramble for us to come up with our costumes. During the week we were working on purchasing a home but it fell through. We weren’t exactly heartbroken so it must have not been the one for us. As for the costumes, Leah had angel wings and a halo that she wore to work last year so we figured it would be quick and easy to just go as an angel and the devil. People seemed to be frightened by Greg’s face painting. He seemed to have been the only really scary-looking costume at the bar. Leah’s parents and grandma dressed up as flower children and the scary part was the clothing was authentic and not hard to find at the Goodwill.

On Saturday we did pretty much nothing except play Guitar Hero IV that we recently purchased. It was our joint Christmas present to each other and we figured if we waited too long the game would be sold out when Christmas shopping starts. We purchased the complete set which comes with drums, microphone and the guitar. It is a really fun game and very addicting. Leah’s brother Justin and his girlfriend Laura were also there and helped us with our band. That night, Leah’s parents and some neighbors joined in on the fun and it was a really fun time.

Pictures of the weekend are now on the photo gallery page.
