Hello, winter, my old friend

27 Oct

I was so sad when I visited our site this morning and saw the title of the previous post, Warm Fall Weekend. *Sigh.* No more of those, I think. In fact, as I write this it’s snowing outside. Yes, snowing. How sad.

This weekend was pretty boring for us. And painful for me. I had to take this medicine on Saturday that very nearly killed me. Well, the drugs didn’t do it, I nearly killed myself. Have you ever seen the movie Pi? If not, I hate to spoil it for you, but at the end he takes a drill to his head and that’s what I felt like doing. It was a close one, but moving my head hurt too much, so the effort to go find the drill would’ve been too much. For some reason, the drugs caused me to have what I can only describe as a major migraine headache. I’ve never actually had a migraine before, but it’s what I imagine one would be like. Complete with the nausea and being sick. Not fun. So that was Saturday, lying on the couch not moving my head much at all until it finally wore off 14 hours later.

Sunday we finally got around to carving pumpkins. Rather early for us because I think last year we didn’t get to it until the night before Halloween. I toasted the seeds and they’re not too bad. I’m sure Greg was disappointed we didn’t bake them using his magical recipe that we never can find, but toasting was super easy.

Greg’s pumpkin is on the left, mine on the right.

We’re still trying to decide what we’re going to be for Halloween. We’re heading down to Mac’s bar for a party on Friday night and then possibly to Cheboygen for Kingsford’s playoff game on Saturday. Not 100% sure yet on that, though.

Any good, easy costume ideas?

Warm fall weekend

12 Oct

The weather was unusually warm this weekend. It was in the 70s throughout the weekend and was great to be outside. On Saturday, we decided to take a mini road trip to Munising to view the fall colors. From our house, we drove on highway M94 east into Munising and stopped at Ackerman Lake and a few other places along the drive so Greg could take some photos. Many of the trees were a little past peak until we got closer to Munising and Lake Superior. After lunch in Munising, we drove to Miners Castle. It was really beautiful with clear skies and a gentle breeze. While we were there we spotted some kayakers at the base of the rock formation. From Miners Castle, we followed a hiking trail a short distance to an area where it opens up and you’re right on the cliff’s edge. Very pretty spot and a little spooky. This was the spot where a couple years ago a guy pushed his wife off the cliff. That trial case was recently featured on NBC’s Dateline. After Miners Castle, we headed to Miners Beach. This secluded sandy beach is just east of Miners Castle and is really beautiful. Looking east and west you can see the cliffs of the Pictured Rocks Lakeshore. On the ride home we drove on highway M28 west and turned off at Sand River Road. This dirt road eventually comes out right near our house and it also passes the Sand River wetlands area. The road is lined with maples and oaks and the colors were very vibrant. Check out our fall drive pictures!

Today was another relaxing day. We got our shopping out of the way at noon and then watched the Lions once again lose a pathetic game (they got cheated). Greg washed his truck while Leah watched the Packers win.

Not too much happening this week for us. Tomorrow we’re going to look at a couple homes for sale and we’ll have to see how that goes. This weekend NMU’s hockey team plays against U. of Michigan so we’ll probably go to that.

Fun Finds Friday

10 Oct

  1. Kittens “act out” Metallica. Pretty cute!
  2. You may have already heard about this, but it’s pretty spooky.
  3. Willow and Dirty Dancing are classics. Who would have known that together they’d make a scary movie? (Darn! I just noticed that this is no longer available. I’ll try to find it somewhere else and fix the link. Sorry!) (Ok, now the link is updated. Only I can’t access YouTube at work, so someone let me know if it’s not working.)
  4. This artist takes My Little Pony dolls and turns them into awesome art creations. Check out the My Little Stormtrooper.
  5. I love candy. But you will never, never, never catch me eating these maple-bacon lollipops. I mean, for real? That is just disgusting and wrong in so many ways.
  6. Ooh! A fun quiz for word nerds! I think you get different questions every time you go, so we can’t really compare results, but how did you do? I only got 5/10. Yikes.
  7. Want to kill yourself with caffeine? I don’t recommend it, but I’d have to drink 148.91 cans of Mountain Dew before I’d die, but only 51.19 cans of Monster. And I’d need to eat 2047.50 Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups.
  8. I am definitely a Yankee (40% Dixie). How about you?
  9. This is a pretty good prank, but my first thought was, “What a waste of post-it notes.”

A Saturday drive

8 Oct

Dead River with fall colorsThis past weekend we stuck close to home and relaxed. The weather was very fall-like so we decided to take an afternoon drive up to Big Bay, a small lakeside town to the northwest. We decided to take the alternative route of County Road 510, a 25-mile dirt road that’s pretty isolated. En route to CR 510, we decided to stop at the Michigan Iron Industry Museum, a first for both of us. It was quite impressive, very interesting and we highly recommend it. The trees along 510 were really beautiful and vibrant. Many parts of the road have an overhead tree canopy that makes it feel like you’re driving through a very colorful tunnel. We were hoping to come across a moose but no such luck. On Sunday, we flip-flopped between two pathetic football games (Packers & Lions) and then went shopping in the late afternoon.

The trees around our house have changed quite fast in the last few days. It’s kind of cool how different areas have a different rate of change. Greg is hoping to get some photos this week of the fall colors when he’s traveling to/from Munising. As for snow… none here, yet. There were reports late last week of the higher terrain areas seeing snowflakes, though. Just a matter of time. (Imagine Leah’s frown here.)
