Memorial Day weekend

31 May

Well, we had a great weekend. It’s too bad it wasn’t a four-day weekend, though. The weather turned out to be nicer than had been forecast, which was great. We headed down to Nahma on Friday and had the first bonfire of the year. We roasted some hot dogs over the fire, and it just felt like summer (maybe not temperature-wise, but it was nice).

On Saturday, Glenda, Randy, Krista, Iris, Iris’ friend Jane, Brittany and her baby Chase, and Dayna and her boyfriend Rob came down. Craziness ensued. Greg and my dad went fishing and stopped off at a party instead of coming home so that Mom and I could go with, so we were worried that something had happened to them. Jerks. Anyway, it did rain Saturday night, so the bonfire was kind of a bust. Greg and I ended up sleeping out at my grandma’s house so that we could actually get some sleep.

Sunday, us women went to Amie’s bridal shower, and when we got home, Greg and Dad were in the exact same places they were in when we left. That night we had a bonfire and made some s’mores. Yummy!

We also ate way more this weekend than was probably good for us. On Sunday, I ate four meals and had dessert three separate times. This week, Greg and I have vowed to eat healthier to make up for it.

Here are more pictures of our weekend.

Not much going on

21 May

I haven’t posted in awhile, but that’s really because not much has been going on. Greg’s ankle is feeling better (and isn’t quite as colorful), so he hopes to do more fishing. Gilbert is still healthy and happy and celebrated his third birthday a couple of days ago. We buried Arthur and Miss Mouse a couple of weeks ago in Nahma.

Greg and I are going on a road trip to Wyoming in June to visit my friend Kami and her husband, Ryan. We’re driving and plan to hit all of the hot spots (Mt. Rushmore, Devil’s Tower, some other places Greg has marked off that I can’t remember) along the way. It’s going to be our first real vacation since our honeymoon, and will be the farthest west that Greg has ever traveled. We’re both very excited and counting the days (literally — we each have a countdown clock on our computers).

Let’s see… what else? Well, Greg recently finished reading Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and has begun Half-Blood Prince. He hopes to be done by the time the 7th book comes out so that he can read that one as soon as I’m finished. But, I need to reread HBP, so if he’s not done with it the week before, I’ll have to borrow someone else’s. I think Justin is planning to come home that weekend so we can make our traditional trip in to Esky to buy it at midnight. However, I won’t get to start reading it until Sunday because of Amie’s wedding on Saturday (which should be really cool — they’re getting married on the beach).

On the home front, we’ve been battling with Mr. Red Squirrel. Not only did he (or Mr. Grey Squirrel, we’re not exactly sure) break both of our hand-made wooden feeders (which I won at various fundraising auctions), but he is determined to destroy the cheap $3.00 plastic feeders I bought to replace them. He’s completely chewed off the little pegs that the birds stand on, except for one so that he can still sit on it to attempt to get seed out. I did buy this seed that supposedly squirrels don’t like, but the birds didn’t like it, either. Wal-Mart sells this hot pepper powder that you mix in with the seed so that the squirrels won’t eat it, but birds still will (apparently their taste buds are immune to the stuff that makes peppers hot), so I’m going to try that next.

Well, that’s about all I can think of. I am so glad that there is a three-day weekend coming up. The weather is projected to be in the 50s, though that will hopefully change (I pray, I pray). We should have some pictures to post after that!

Graduation day

7 May

Justin graduated from Michigan Tech on Saturday, so we went up to Houghton for the day. He’ll start back with IBM in a couple weeks, and I know he is so happy to be done. Congratulations, Justin!

On our way back to Marquette, we had to stop at the Sturgeon River so Greg could do some fishing, but he was unsuccessful yet again.

Snap, krackle, pop

1 May

At my work, we’re in the process of moving into a new workspace. Little did I know that at 2:30 this afternoon I would step awkwardly out of the moving trailer and land sideways on my left ankle. I did managed to continue carrying the crates I was holding into the building but I was done after that. I really don’t enjoy that feeling of instant pain/numbness/nausea when you injury yourself. We debated whether to go to the hospital but in the end we did. It turned out to be a hairline fracture in the ankle region. They gave me an air cast and sent me home. What’s interesting are some the prescribed items to heal it:

  • Soak in pail of ice water – not that unusual but it feels like a millions pins poking into your skin (I never want to fall through the ice while ice fishing)
  • Drink 8oz water with 1oz of lemon juice, 8 times a day – what a mouthful
  • Eat baked/broiled fish each day or take a fish oil pill – I haven’t been catching fish lately so I’ll go with the pill
  • Do not ingest any dairy products

All of the remedies are suppose to reduce the swelling. Hopefully this doctor wasn’t a practicing scientologist.

I’ll update in a few days to let you know how the healing is coming.
